Balance

2. Unity

3. Proportion

4. Emphasis

5. Sequence

Working

I think there are 3 types of people that I work with:

1. Other designers - This is usually good. We can debate ideas, brainstorm and even collaborate. Most designers have strong opinions on things but are willing to listen and can be open to collaborative solutions. Especially when it comes to user interface or user experience decisions. Aesthetics…..well thats a different story.

2. Non-designers who know their own strengths and leave the designing up to the designer - ( can be clients, project managers, analysts, product managers ) This is just short of amazing when it happens. This person will often say something akin to ‘well you know about it more than I do so I’ll leave it up to you’ or they’ll suggest a direction but ultimately leave the final product in the designers hands. They realize they don’t know enough to make a more informed decision than the designer. When it comes to product managers, they’ll leave a wireframe but that is just to demonstrate the requirements, and the design is open to alteration.

3. Non-designers who have no respect for the role of the designer and assume they can do the designers job or believe the designer is just there to use photoshop or other tools - Unfortunately these people are fairly common in my world. There is no shortage of product managers or clients or CEO’s who are fairly certain their ‘design’ skills are on par with any designers. They assume since they ‘use’ things that qualifies them as a UX expert or because they like apple they know the best visual design for the project. Some are blog educated ‘designers’ that have never practiced what they preach, or built something from scratch. Coincidentally most of these types don’t believe in user testing. They only need a designer because we can use the tools of the trade. I have been a part of many failed projects due to individuals like these.

Beat Connection - Saola

Only I don’t want it to reduce the design experience into a process that can be overly managed and generalized.
